PALM BEACH, Fla. — On Friday evening, President Donald Trump declared that he was revoking Joe Biden's security clearance, which means the former president will no longer receive classified briefings. “We are immediately terminating Joe Biden’s Security Clearances and halting his daily Intelligence Briefings,” he posted on social media as he arrived for the weekend. This action seems to be a form of political retaliation after Biden revoked Trump’s security clearance in 2021.
“He set this precedent in 2021 when he directed the Intelligence Community (IC) to prevent the 45th President of the United States (ME!) from accessing National Security details, a privilege typically extended to former Presidents,” Trump stated, also questioning Biden's mental fitness without providing evidence as justification for cutting off his access to briefings.
A spokesperson for Biden did not immediately respond to the announcement.
In a February 2021 interview with “CBS Evening News With Norah O’Donnell,” Biden expressed that Trump should not have access to intelligence briefings. He pointed to Trump’s “erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection,” which referred to the events of January 6, 2021, when the Capitol was attacked.
“I just believe there is no reason for him to receive intelligence briefings. What benefit does giving him an intelligence briefing provide? What influence does he have, other than the possibility that he might accidentally disclose something?” Biden remarked when asked about it. This decision also came amid concerns regarding Trump’s handling of classified information.
Historically, these briefings have been offered to former
presidents so they could provide counsel to their successors.
There is little evidence that Trump intends to seek advice from his predecessor.
“I will always safeguard our National Security — JOE, YOU’RE FIRED. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he tweeted on Friday.
